Friends, darling, friends…
“That’s when I realized what a true friend was. Someone who would always love you – the imperfect you, the confused you, the wrong you – because that is what friends are supposed to do.” — Author Unknown
In my case, I have moved around a whole lot throughout my whole lifetime and not that it has been 100 years nor I feel old in any way, (maybe going back to college has something to do with it? Nah, I just think that my young spirit always lives in me.) it has been a wild ride for about 25 years…
Moving on a constant basis, going to countless schools by now, moving continents and changing cultures at the drop of a hat, all that and more, leaves a person a bit distraught and alone. It also makes a person more independent as well as either caring tons more or caring tons less, either way, I have done it all. All without a doubt. I have made mistakes when it came to friendships, I´ve had my heart broken, I had some that I didn´t really care about, I´ve had other that got me wondering, I´ve had endless amount of love and I´ve had brand new starts.
Now from 25 till now? Till right this moment? Well, dear Flyer, you see, that I´ve finally gave myself a chance to settle down a bit, in a city that I am passionate about, I am also finding myself more and more and with all these personal changes, what else comes with it? People. People who become friends, people who either come in or out, people who stay … people who have stayed in this short period of time, living the most imperfect me, listening to the most confused me, looking at the wrong me and finding out the right me, reaching out to find the most clear and composed me…
“We made a deal ages ago. Men, babies, it doesn’t matter…We’re soulmates.” – Samantha Jones, Sex and the City
Friends, am I right? Those are my soulmates… It doesn’t have to be romantic love to be a soulmate, it can very well be a friendship… Having friendships of many kinds, it is remarkable and something else, to say to least, when you take a step back and see who is by your side and whose side you are on. It takes courage, patience, trust, honesty, laughs, falls, cries, real hard talks and endless amounts of confessions to build a friendship up.
Regardless of the time you have known each other, the home base of it all is that they will always speak the truth. They will always tell you what is up and what is down, what is shaking and what is lit, what needs to be said, no matter what happens. You need to hear it, they will tell you. Because someone has to and who better than a friend?
“A best friend won’t agree with you to make you happy. If anything, they’ll say what needs to be said, no matter if you want to hear it or not.” — Author Unknown
Friends laugh at each other so much, friends can totally go into deeper kind of jokes and nobody leaves offended. Friends are able to show their truest self, no matter the shade. Just think of all those inside jokes and those burns. Those are also worth gold.
“Friends joke with one another. ‘Hey, you’re poor. Hey, your momma’s dead.’ That’s what friends do.” – Michael Scott,The Office
Of course, with boundaries… because even though they mainly care about the wine you have and not about the dirty dishes, because even though they can come in and get anything from your fridge or plop down on the sofa to turn some Netflix on before you even have time to close the door, they also respect your space and know where and what to say.
“Friends wouldn’t ask friends to give them dresses for free.” – Kim Kardashian, Keeping Up With the Kardashians
When was the last time you said thank you to friendship? To them? When last did you celebrate you two? Where and when it all began, when and where you lift each other higher, when and how you two clicked… and not to be all nostalgic and all, it is more than that. It is to celebrate the bond, the closeness, the whole world you built with one another… celebrate it, say thank you, give them their favorite treat, spoil them and spoil yourselves.
“You’re like the only person who’s ever gotten what I’m about.” — Nick Andopolis, Freaks and Geeks
“Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.”— Oprah Winfrey
Thank You. Thank you to those next to me, to my home team, to the ones who has ridden both the limo and the bus with me, to the ones who has sheltered me and has lived in my home, to the ones that have drunk my wine like their own, to the ones who let me turn the music up too loud in their house because my favorite song was on, to the ones that trusted me with their all, the ones I let in on all my secret and random thoughts… This is for you, you know I´ll be forever thankful, forever catching up and making sure I have you… Thank you!
Now, can we go and celebrate? After all, that is what life is all about!
“Everyone has a home team: It’s the people you call when you get a flat tire or when something terrible happens. It’s the people who, near or far, know everything that’s wrong with you and love you anyways. These are the ones who tell you their secrets, who get themselves a glass of water without asking when they’re at your house. These are the people who cry when you cry. These are your people, your middle-of-the-night, no-matter-what people.” — Shauna Niequist, Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way
